Accepting one’s unique traits is key to personal development

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

The way a person assesses their life and views their character plays a large role in determining exactly how their life will play out. Most people tend to think of their nature as being predetermined and set from the moment of their birth through the collection of their life experiences. However, the types of thoughts that a person has have a major impact on their personality.

Author and philosopher Ilchi Lee says that people should be mindful of the influence their thoughts can have over their personality and take steps to think more positively. This can turn someone who feels ordinary and boring into a superstar who is capable of transfixing a room with their personality, charm and wit.

"What do you think of yourself?" Lee asked. "Do you think 'I am a special person,' or 'I am a normal person, who just happened to be born.' This makes a lot of difference in how your life unfolds."

Rather than simply accepting the ordinariness of existence, individuals should embrace the things that make them unique. It is only through this process that an individual can grasp personal development and make their life better.

Every one of us has something special inside that makes us special. However, a person has two choices. They can either bury their unique characteristics and try their best to fit in with everyone around them or they can reach deep down within themselves and work to develop their special traits.

The latter is the surest path to spiritual growth and may even help contribute to the blooming of society. We are all special, personal success is simply a matter of believing this.

Spiritual growth comes from within

All too often, individuals base their happiness on other people. They do not feel fulfilled unless their family members or their partner are by their side. While interpersonal relationships are important and can be worthwhile, Ilchi Lee says that spiritual growth rarely springs from these types of connections.

"Don't wait for someone else to make you happy," he said. "Think of yourself as a beautiful instrument. Will you wait for someone to play you, or make your own music for your life?"

Perhaps an individual may find another person who is capable of playing beautiful accompaniment to their music, and that is a positive thing. However, Lee says that people should not be afraid to play a solo once in a while. Sometimes, this music can be more satisfying than a duet.

Looking inside oneself frequently makes answers to life's perplexing questions more clear. Additionally, an individual can build a foundation of self-esteem and love inside of their heart. This can then be spread throughout the world.

This type of spiritual fulfillment is most readily available to a person when they look within.
